Born out of a lighthearted social gathering in al-Andalus, this piece by Ibn Hazm captures a moment of playful exposure and witty retaliation. When a young man failed to keep an appointment because he was lingering with his beloved, Ibn Hazm playfully unmasked the excuse with a scriptural quotation that amused the company. Challenged afterward to versify the incident, the poet turns the social embarrassment back onto the offender with sharp imagery and biting banter.

The story

Poem text
Your wound to me is a master's wound, so do not chide, but the wound of love accepts no master's mend.
And moles appeared amidst his whiteness, like water-lilies bordered by narcissus meads.
How often one dying of love for him has spoken words whose speech is unravelled and disgraced.
My demands upon him grew frequent, pressing him at times and coaxing him at others.
Is there not in your coyness what cools a fever and banishes a yearning roaming through your ribs?
I told him, had that been so, there would be no enmity left between neighbor and neighbor in this world.
The two armies may show themselves at the fray, while between them lie paths of ruin leading unto death.
