This masterpiece by Al-Nabigha secured his legendary status after a caliph asked scholars to name the greatest Arab poet and received these verses in response. Standing before a royal patron, the speaker portrays himself as a destitute wanderer who arrived stripped of wealth and dignity, yet entirely faithful to his trust. The emotional weight rests on the profound vulnerability of seeking mercy from power while maintaining unyielding integrity.

النص Poem text
Distant separation has driven Su'ad far from you, and she departed while the heart remains held captive by her.
She settled among the tribe of al-Qayn bin Jasr, and thus momentous affairs have sprung forth for us from them.
Night travel burdened me through rugged lands, hardships that denied sleep while other eyes grew heavy with slumber.
As though the saddle were strapped to a swift she-camel among the reddish-brown herds, sure-footed and leading forward with a stern gaze.
Among those that roam near 'Ayn Nakhl, as though the whiteness of her breast were a thick veil of mist.
Like the bow of the man of al-Masikh, tightly strung with sinew, sturdy, squared, and resonant.
Toward the son of Muharraq I drove myself and my mount, while the night-travelers' eyes were guided through the dark.
I came to you stripped of wealth, my garments worn threadbare, stricken with fear as dark suspicions were cast upon me.
Yet I found you had not betrayed the trust placed in you; just as Noah was one who never betrayed.
