Umar ibn Abi Rabi'ah is celebrated for transforming the classical Arabic ghazal from a conventional prelude into vibrant, direct dramatic narrative. This poem captures a classic encounter where the poet overhears a group of young women discussing his reputation, culminating in a flirtatious recognition that highlights his legendary status as the poet of love in early Islamic Arabia.

النص Poem text
Campsites left behind and worn by time have stirred my heart, grown over now with trees.
Summer winds have dealt ruin to them, weaving the earth with patterns of dust and rain.
I lingered there one day, standing still to ask the dwelling if it held any news.
For her who said to companions of hers—plodding gently, possessed of warmth and modesty—
As they walked together through a delightful valley, bright with fresh vegetation blanketed in blooms.
Upon soft, even ground adorned by a day of cloud unmarred by haze or smoke.
We were left alone, and they wished among us; today, left alone, we lay bare what we kept secret.
They recognized yearning in her glance, and the bubbling foam of desire is revealed by the look.
They spoke, trying to please her: 'Our greatest wish is that Umar might come to us today in secret.'
While they were speaking of me, they caught sight of me less than a mile away, my white-blazed horse galloping towards them.
The eldest said, 'Do you recognize the young man?' The middle one answered, 'Yes, this is Umar.'
The youngest said, her heart entirely captured by him: 'We know him, and is the moon ever hidden?'
This is a beloved who did not turn aside from us; fate and destiny drove him straight to our door.
He came to us just as the camel of night lowered its chest upon the earth and hastened forward.
The scent of musk drifted from his garments, glistening like water poured over them to make them shine.
What we wished for has come to pass, and scheming censors and foul talk have been kept far from us.
