This lyric stands among the most celebrated romantic flights by Abbas Mahmoud al-Aqqad. Written in response to a literary challenge concerning what a deity would bestow upon his beloved, the poet sidesteps conventional material extravagance to offer a sovereignty that humbles the cosmos itself. The verses capture the supreme confidence of a lover elevating his affection far above the physical universe, crafting a universe where the beloved reigns over creation.

السياق The story

Poem text
I give you—how? Yet giving is not the best of what / hearts display of sincere and passionate love.
Nay, if I became, as you and I desired, / a god, I would take you with the certainty of one who trusts.
Then you would see that when you won my footsteps, / you were sweeter and more complete than all my creation.
You hold sway over the vicissitudes of fate, and above them / beat the pulses of my yearning, infatuated heart.
If the Lord of the universe has your heart as His own, / how insignificant to you are stars and thunderbolts!
And every glowing sun in the heavens, / and every surging sea across the broad earth.
