This playful and unusual poem by Al-Ma'arri captures the precise movements and appearance of a visiting swallow, comparing its dark plumage and posture to a cloaked figure with a chestnut-like head. Though attributed by medieval accounts as a description of a small bird rather than a conventional address to a human patron or beloved, the verses reveal a rare lightness in the usually austere master of Ma'arra, finding quiet wonder in the sudden arrival of a migratory guest.

النص Poem text
And one clad in the pitch-darkness of night, her chest opening wide like the folds of a tunic,
With a head resembling an untutored king of the oak-forest, chanting in a foreign tongue quite un-Arabic.
She bears a tail like merchants and two daggers for wings, cleaving through the morning air.
The dyer has truly mastered the flowing black of her coat, brushing the nape and shoulder with the grace of falconry hoods.
You see her when morning approaches smiling, while the darkness retreats before her, vanquished and scowling.
She warbles—I know not whether mourning the vanished night or trilling in delight at the light of dawn.
The moment she alights in a people's courtyard, they rejoice, crying out to her: Welcome and well met!
