Abu Bakr az-Zubaydi writes this poem from the court, caught by official duties while his heart remains behind in Seville with his female companion, Salma. Forbidden by the ruler to return to her, he channels his frustration into verses of profound separation and helpless longing. The poem captures the agonizing standstill of a lover pleading against the machinery of state power that keeps him apart from the person he loves.

النص Poem text
Alas, O Salma, do not be afraid; departure must inevitably set out.
Do not think I endured with the patience of one dying in the agony of the soul's removal.
God has not created any torment more severe than the halting of the farewell.
There is no difference between it and the grave, were it not for the final whispers and the mourners.
Soon our unified company will scatter, after having been gathered together.
For every gathered bond of mine is a parting, and every tribe of mine a fracturing.
And every nearness of mine is distance, and every joining of mine is a severance.
