Ibn Hazm composed these verses following an occasion recorded regarding an Arab woman named Hind bint al-Khuss, who was questioned about her pregnancy by a relative and offered a cryptic reply. Written in al-Andalus, the poem reflects the sharp, analytical wit of a scholar famously uncompromising in both his legal treatises and his personal philosophy. Rather than lamenting a social betrayal, the poet treats human nature with a cold, defensive realism, advising total suspicion in an age where trust is inherently flawed.

النص Poem text
Do not blame whoever exposes the soul when / nothing else satisfies during times of hardship.
Do not bring the arfaj plant close to a flame / for the moment you draw it near, a blaze erupts.
Rely with confidence upon no one at all / for all people and the very times have become corrupt.
Woman was created for the stallion just as / the stallion was created, without doubt, for them.
Every kind desires its own kind / do not clear away suspicions regarding anyone.
The mark of the righteous person is that you protect them / from ugliness, while they display willing obedience.
As for anyone else whom you test and find lacking / he employs every trick to cast off the halter.
