In this urgent address, Omar Abu Risha confronts his countrymen, speaking as an impassioned patriot who refuses to let the public play the victim. Written to reproach the populace for electing flawed and self-serving representatives to parliament instead of holding true accountability, the poem channels a deep, painful disappointment. Rather than comforting the people in their suffering, the poet strips away their excuses, laying the blame for their political misery squarely at their own feet.

النص Poem text
O people, do not complain of misery, nor let your wailing linger in it.
If you were not wounded by your own hands, we would bandage your wounds.
You are the ones who chose the men to run your affairs, and looked to them for your salvation.
Yet behold, they drape your sash of honor over the baseness of their petty world.
How often have they broken your covenants, and drank your vitality with your own consent.
Does your chest bleed from their wounds, yet you hand them your weapons?
My sorrow for you—is this how you fold your wing in humiliation?
Had you not surrendered the heights of life to your whims, no one would have ever violated you.
