Al-Mu'tamid ibn Abbad, once the most powerful king of Seville during the Taifas period, wrote this devastating poem from his prison cell in Aghmat. Having lost his kingdom to the Almoravids and witnessed the humiliation and poverty of his family, he confronts the irony of celebrating a major Islamic holiday in chains. The poem derives its immense emotional power from the agonizing contrast between his former absolute sovereignty and his total destitution.

السياق The story

Poem text
In times past you were gladdened by the holidays, but the holiday has vexed you here in Aghmat, chained as a captive.
You see your daughters in coarse rags and hungry, spinning for people what is not even worth a qatmir.
They stepped forward to greet you with humbled gazes, their eyes full of heartbreaking regrets and drooping low.
They tread in the mud with bare feet, as though they had never walked upon musk and camphor.
Not a cheek but its surface complains of drought, watered by nothing save their own sighs and breathing.
You broke your fast on the feast—may its misfortune never return—so that your breaking became a shattering of livers.
Your time used to obey you instantly if you commanded it, but time has turned you into one who is forbidden and commanded.
Whoever spends the night after you in a kingdom taking delight in it, has only been deceived by dreams.
