Abd al-Rahman I composed these verses after fleeing the collapse of his family's dynasty in the East and establishing a lonely exile in the Iberian Peninsula. Catching sight of a solitary palm tree standing amidst the gardens of al-Rusafa, the founder of al-Andalus finds in its unfamiliar surroundings a quiet mirror for his own displacement. The poem is loved for how it turns a piece of landscape into an intimate confession of rootlessness, bridging the vast distance between a lost homeland and a precarious new beginning through a shared condition of being out of place.

السياق The story

Poem text
A palm tree appeared to us in the middle of al-Rusafa, removed in the western land from the country of palms.
So I said: You are my double in estrangement and distant exile, and in the length of separation from my children and my family.
You grew up in a land where you are a stranger, and one like you in extreme remoteness and distance is like me.
May the early clouds of the drenching rain water you, pouring down and greeting the twin stars of al-Simak with heavy downpours.
