Summary

Al-Ma'arri addresses a eulogy to Salih ibn Mirdas, the ruler of Aleppo, balancing deep personal grief and political caution. Following Salih's violent death, the poet had to carefully obscure the patron's identity within the lines, transforming a public tribute into a deeply veiled, mournful monument that ultimately led him to a life of complete seclusion.

The story

He who kisses his spearhead out of love for the thrusts it delivers, as though it were fashioned entirely from dark, luscious lips.

The souls passing away through your spearhead extinguish it, much like the rush of night winds putting out the light of a torch.
