Al-Ghazal composed this playful, improvisational piece for Tod, the wife of the pagan King of Castile, after she playfully inquired about his age. When he quipped that he was merely a young man of twenty, she laughed at the impossibility of it, prompting him to spin this clever verse on the spot to charm her.

النص Poem text
O heart, you have been burdened with a tiring passion, wrestling a stubborn lion because of it.
Indeed, I have grown attached to a fire-worshipper who refuses to let the sun of her beauty set.
At the farthest reaches of God's lands, where no traveler can find a clear path.
O Tod, O tender branch of youth, who brings forth a star from her tunic's buttons.
By my father, the person whom I see as neither sweeter nor more delightful to my heart.
If I said one day that my eye saw her equal, I would do nothing but lie.
She said, "I see the hair at his temples has turned white," a playful tease demanding I exert myself.
I said to her, "What of it? Just so does the foal sometimes turn out speckled."
She burst into laughter, marveling at my reply, yet I spoke only to make her wonder.
