Imprisoned during his time as vizier after being caught in the volatile political crosscurrents between rival rulers, Avempace wrote these verses to appeal to his ally Abu Ja'far Yazid. The poem captures the jarring shock of sudden downfall and the bitter gloating of detractors who assumed his political ruin was permanent. At its heart lies a desperate plea for recognition and rescue, driven by a profound sense of isolation and the cruel unpredictability of fortune.

النص Poem text
Perhaps, O Yazid, you have known my state, so learn what calamity I have met.
If I remain through such as what afflicts me, then it is a wonder of the nights that I survived.
The gloaters say, 'A healing draught of fortune' — by the life of the gloaters, I have indeed been wretched.
Do they possess safety from the nights, and has the hateful time made peace with them?
And they do not know that they shall be given to drink, in a turning turn, from the cup I was made to drain.
