Composed by Avempace while imprisoned in Xàtiva after fleeing the fall of Zaragoza, this poem turns political ruin and captivity into a meditation on impermanence. Stripped of his position and facing the hostility of the Almoravid governor Abu Ishaq, the philosopher-poet addresses an intellectual companion, measuring the fleeting nature of both suffering and fortune against the quiet dignity of an unbowed mind.

النص Poem text
Calm yourself, for neither time nor its vicissitudes will endure, nor does life itself remain.
And go forth with a soul that was never lowered by its carriage, wherever you settle and wherever you find yourself wise.
O my companion in both word and meaning, whom I knew intimately even before the tests of division.
Put aside the heavy grief signified by the letter, and cast off that burden as something ignoble.
Grant me your company and converse with me, for the night is pitch black like the tumultuous events of the age.
Take me in the wake of time, for both the misery and the bliss of its children have already passed.
Perhaps I shall see that arrogant lord of fortune struck down in sickness, while the master of suffering is gladdened.
Far from it—their graves have made them equal, and the envied one is now indistinguishable from the pitied.
