This intense and agonizing elegy was composed by Al-Musabbihi to mourn the loss of his father, who lived to a remarkably advanced age. Rather than addressing a human audience or a patron, the speaker directs his fury and grief directly toward Fate itself, painting Time as a cruel adversary that has torn away the foundational pillar of his life. The verses capture the utter paralysis of deep bereavement, where normal consolation fails entirely and the mind is consumed by the finality of the grave.

النص Poem text
A calamity too great for tears, before which solace folds its tents, and the hidden truth stands bare.
A catastrophe that kills the hearts within breasts with bitter regret, now dropping a man to his knees, now letting him stand.
O Time, you have sunk your claws into me, leaving wounds from the two black beasts whose blows do not heal.
O Time, you have dressed me in the robes of sorrow ever since a noble person settled into the dust.
Had you accepted a ransom, I would have redeemed him whose bones you broke while he was already crumbling to dust.
O you who blame the one who cries out in grief at the sudden blow of fate, why do you blame him?
By my father, I have been stricken; what bereavement equals this? The loss of fatherhood in one's youth is agonizing.
I used to dread the approach of ruin, or the moment when the griefs of this age would lay hold of him.
