This intimate and heartbreaking elegy was composed by Amira Nur al-Din in Cairo on the fortieth day following her father's passing in January 1955. Overwhelmed by sudden grief and the physical distance that kept her away during his final moments, the poet channels her sorrow into a deeply personal dialogue with the dead, measuring the unbearable permanence of loss against her own desperate, impossible wish to trade places with him.

النص Poem text
O my father, you turned away from the world in haste … O my father, have mercy, for you have shattered my hope.
O my father, your absence in this world keeps me awake … So how shall it be if we remain apart until eternity?
O my father, the news of your death kindled a fire in my liver … And my weeping eyes were worn raw in their endless pouring.
Iraq folded itself toward Egypt to deliver unto me … The news of your death like a lightning flash at night, without a moment's pause.
I came close to perishing from weeping, finding no solace … And how could I console myself in an affliction so immense?
O my father, I would gladly ransom you with my soul and all that is precious together … If only life could be taken at death by way of exchange.
Or if a dead person could be washed of sins with tears … I would have made the water of my weeping the finest ritual bath.
Or if the dead could be buried within hearts … I would have made my heart your resting place, without a place of transfer.
