Composed in the Abbasid court, this short piece captures Arib al-Ma'muniyya performing for Caliph al-Mutawakkil upon his recovery from a serious illness. Rather than relying on formal panegyric, the poet turns a private moment of relief into an intimate offering, wishing to bear the ruler's fever in his stead.

النص Poem text
They came to me and said, "The caliph is ill" — / and I replied, while the fire of longing kindled in my breast:
Ah, would that the fever of Caliph Ja'far were mine, / so that the fever were on me and his reward were his!
It is grief enough that they said he had a fever and I did not die / from the grief. Surely, after this, I am truly one who endures.
I have made myself a ransom for Caliph Ja'far — / and that is little of my praise and of my thanksgiving.
