Taqi al-Din al-Subki addresses a seeker tangled in the intensity of spiritual states and longings, offering a measured legal and mystical ruling on the controversies surrounding sama' and bodily movement in remembrance. Written as a direct response to a specific inquiry on the lawfulness of spiritual concerts compared to backbiting, the poem balances strict jurisprudence with a profound validation of ecstatic experience.

النص Poem text
O companion of spiritual states and sighs, and of private remembrance and praise in seclusion,
As for backbiting people, it is strictly forbidden by the explicit text of God in Surah Al-Hujurat.
Therefore beware of it, beware! Do not trade it for idle amusements tainted by doubt.
And know that the dancing and the drum about which you asked and spoke aloud,
Have been matters of disagreement among our early imams, the lights of guidance and lords of lords.
Yet no revealed law ever commanded them, nor established them among the obligatory acts of nearness to God.
Yet when the yearning knower of God is shaken by rapture, he stands up, wandering in a daze of intoxication.
No blame attaches to him, and his state is praised—how sweet are the delights he encounters!
If you attain this one day, you have attained your goal, and have no further need for the verdicts of legalists.
This is the reply of Ali al-Subki, bearing great burdens, the companion of sorrows.
