Qadi al-Wahhab al-Maliki addresses his lifelong home, Baghdad, following an abrupt departure driven by false accusations and dwindling fortunes rather than malice. Forced to flee out of fear for his safety and the scarcity of daily sustenance, the jurist laments his exile with a poignant blend of lingering devotion and the bitter realization that the city he loved could no longer sustain him.

النص Poem text
Peace be upon Baghdad in every single place, and she is well-deserving of a double peace from me.
By God, I did not leave her out of hatred for her, and anyone who knows both her banks knows this well.
Rather, the whole world closed in on me within her borders, when her provisions failed to accommodate me.
She became like a close friend whose nearness I craved, yet whose bitter character drove him away and set him at odds with me.
