Captured after her father's fall and sold into a Seville household, Buthaina bint al-Mu'tamid sends these verses across the distance of exile to her parents. She addresses her father, al-Mu'tamid ibn Abbad, and her stepmother, and the poem balances the shock of sudden ruin against the pride of royal lineage. It remains beloved for how it turns a moment of captive helplessness into a personal appeal full of dignity, bridging political catastrophe with the intimate voice of a daughter.

The story

Poem text
Hear my words and listen to my speech, for they are necklaces gleaming upon necks.
Do not deny that I was taken captive, and that I am the daughter of a king from the Banu Abbad.
A great king whose era has passed, for thus does time lead to ruin.
When God willed the scattering of our unity, and made us taste the bitterness of grief instead of sustenance.
Hypocrisy rose against my father in his realm, so separation drew near against our will.
So I went forth fleeing, and a man seized me who did not proceed with righteousness.
When he sold me the sale of slaves, but then one sheltered me who guarded me from distress.
And he desired me for the marriage of a pure youth, of fine traits, from the noble families.
And he went to seek your opinion in approval, while you look upon the path of my right guidance.
Perhaps you, my father, will acquaint me with him, if he is one hoped upon for affection.
And perhaps the Rumaikiyya of kings, in her grace, will call upon blessings and happiness for us.
