Ibn al-Adim stands before the Abbasid court in Baghdad, delivering a speech and offering formal allegiance on behalf of a major northern ruler who had recently seized control of Damascus. The verses balance diplomatic duty with deep panegyric, weaving political submission into grand claims about the caliph's spiritual and worldly authority.

النص Poem text
What does he who recites his panegyrics say, when verses and surahs have already brought them to us?
If one speaks, speech exhausts itself before reaching their goal, and if one lengthens it, length itself proves too brief.
Caliph of God, your virtues cannot be numbered; indeed, the eloquent speaker is left utterly tongue-tied in trying to bound them.
As for intercession through you on the Day of Return, it is stored away precisely for those burdened with major sins and slips.
And as for generosity, your downpour poured forth its heavy rain after Umar had miserly withheld it and sought rain through prayer.
Thus through you we have the rain-giving cloud in this lower world, and through you we hope for the ultimate rescue in the next while we wait.
