This fierce and defiant piece by Al-Ma'arri arises from a bitter chapter in the blind master's life, when envious rivals and false disciples manufactured forged poems filled with blasphemies to ruin his reputation. Rather than shrink from the onslaught, he turns their malice back upon them with razor-sharp irony, contrasting his steadfast devotion to the Creator against the petty falsehoods hurled by his detractors.

النص Poem text
A nation has grown eager to heap blame on me, while I am eager to praise its Creator.
I have worshipped my Lord as best as I could, and kept myself clear of His creatures.
Fools gathered together to crowd and press against me, but they cut nothing away.
They stirred things up against me, yet I felt nothing, while they imagined I was torn to pieces.
And every single thing they uttered is an utter lie—by your life, pure fabrication.
