غريبٌ أنا في دمشقَ وفي القاهرةْغريبٌ أنا في بلادي التي سُرقت

I am a stranger in Damascus and in Cairo / I am a stranger in my country which has been stolen

كم منزلٍ في الأرض يألفه الفتىوحنينُه أبداً لأول منزلِ

How many a home on earth does a young man grow to love / yet his longing is forever for his very first home.

أراكَ عَصِيَّ الدمعِ شيمتُكَ الصبرُأما للهوى نهيٌ عليكَ ولا أمرُ؟

I see your tears will not come — endurance is your nature; / has love over you neither prohibition nor command?

أضحى التنائي بديلاً من تدانيناوناب عن طيب لقيانا تجافينا

Parting has become the substitute for our closeness / and alienation has taken the place of our sweet meeting

على هذه الأرض ما يستحق الحياةتردد إبريل، رائحة الخبز في الفجر

On this earth there is that which deserves life / the hesitation of April, the smell of bread at dawn

منتصب القامة أمشيمرفوع الهامة أمشي

I walk with my stature erect / I walk with my head held high

ولقد ذكرتُكِ والرماحُ نواهلٌمني وبيضُ الهندِ تقطرُ من دمي

And indeed I remembered you while the spears were drinking / from me and the Indian swords were dripping with my blood

الخيلُ والليلُ والبيداءُ تعرفُنيوالسيفُ والرمحُ والقرطاسُ والقلمُ

The horses and the night and the desert know me / And the sword and the spear and the parchment and the pen

أمرُّ على الديارِ ديارِ ليلىأُقبِّلُ ذا الجدارَ وذا الجدارا

I pass by the dwellings, the dwellings of Layla / kissing this wall and that wall

إذا قلتُ ما بي يا بُثينةُ قاتليمن الحبِّ، قالت: ثابتٌ ويزيدُ

If I say, Buthayna, that love is killing me, / she answers: it holds fast, and it grows.

يُذَكِّرُني طُلوعُ الشمسِ صَخراًوأَذكُرُهُ لِكُلِّ غُروبِ شَمسِ

The sunrise reminds me of Sakhr / and I remember him at every sunset

لِكُلِّ شَيءٍ إِذا ما تَمَّ نُقصانُفَلا يُغَرَّ بِطيبِ العَيشِ إِنسانُ

For everything, when it is complete, there is a decrease / therefore let no human be deluded by the goodness of life.

وأرعنَ طمّاحِ الذُؤابةِ باذخٍيُطاولُ أعنانَ السماءِ بغاربِ

And many a jagged mountain, its crest straining upward, lofty, / that reaches for the tracts of the sky with its high ridge.

يا مَن رَأى البِركَةَ الحَسناءَ رُؤيَتُهاوَالآنِساتِ إِذا لاحَت مَغانيها

O you who have seen the pool, beautiful to look upon, / and the maidens when their dwellings came into view.

تَحطَّمُنا الأَيّامُ حَتّى كَأَنَّنازُجاجٌ وَلَكِن لا يُعادُ لَنا سَبكُ

The days shatter us until we are as if made of glass — / but we are never cast anew.

ما كُلُّ ما يَتَمَنّى المَرءُ يُدرِكُهُتَجري الرِياحُ بِما لا تَشتَهي السُفُنُ

Not everything a man wishes for does he attain; / the winds blow contrary to what the ships desire.

فَغُضَّ الطَرفَ إِنَّكَ مِن نُمَيرٍفَلا كَعباً بَلَغتَ وَلا كِلابا

So lower your gaze, for you are from Numayr / you have reached neither Ka'b nor Kilab

دَعِ المَكارِمَ لا تَرحَل لِبُغيَتِهاوَاِقعُد فَإِنَّكَ أَنتَ الطاعِمُ الكاسي

Abandon noble deeds and do not travel in search of them / and sit down, for you are the one who eats and dresses

أَمِن تَذَكُّرِ جيرانٍ بِذي سَلَمِمَزَجتَ دَمعاً جَرى مِن مُقلَةٍ بِدَمِ

Is it from remembering neighbors at Dhu Salam / that you mixed tears flowing from an eye with blood?

بانَت سُعادُ فَقَلبي اليَومَ مَتبولُمُتَيَّمٌ إِثرَها لَم يُفدَ مَكبولُ

Su'ad has departed, and my heart today is stricken, / enslaved in her wake, in chains no ransom frees.

نَعَم بِالصَبا قَلبي صَبا لِأَحِبَّتيفَيا حَبَّذا ذاكَ الشَذا حينَ هَبَّتِ

Yes — at the east wind my heart inclined toward those I love; / how sweet that fragrance was when the wind blew.

أَنا مَن أَهوى وَمَن أَهوى أَنانَحنُ روحانِ حَلَلنا بَدَنا

I am the one I love and the one I love is I, / we are two spirits that have inhabited a single body.

إِذا الشَعبُ يَوماً أَرادَ الحَياةَفَلا بُدَّ أَن يَستَجيبَ القَدَر

If the people one day desire life / then fate must needs respond

في بِلادي حَيثُ تَحتَرِقُ الشُموسُوَيَموتُ الفَجرُ مِن خَجَلِ

In my country where the suns burn / And the dawn dies of shame
