Ibn Arabi wrote this elegy to mourn the passing of al-Malik al-Aziz Uthman, a ruler in Damascus who passed away in the early thirteenth century. Rather than adopting the conventional, secular grief of standard court poetry, the text reframes death as a gentle submission to the earth itself. The tone shifts the profound sorrow of a sudden loss into a peaceful surrender to divine decree, blending deep personal grief with the quiet dignity of a soul returning to its origin.

النص Poem text
The gentle mount asked for her dear master to take him from her back in generosity toward him, and so he answered.
From the caller of his Creator she summoned him to herself, and thus he complied obediently and turned back.
Out of a possessive love that rose up for him, she clothed him in a garment made of earth.
Out of love for his staying in her womb, she cast large stones and dust down upon him.
So that he might abide within her until the day he is summoned to attend a station and a reckoning.
Then he triumphs in the overarching good and ascends toward the dune to gaze upon his loved ones.
