Ahmed Shawqi reflects upon his childhood and youth spent near Mount Tubad in Arabia, the legendary setting of the romance of Qays and Layla. Aging and weighed down by time, the poet returns mentally to the rocks, the paths, and the memory of first love that haunts the mountain. The piece captures a deep nostalgia for an unrecoverable past where even the stones seem indifferent to his longing.

النص Poem text
Mount Tubad, may the rain cloud greet you, and may God water our youth and watch over it.
Upon you we whispered to love in its cradle, and we nursed it, so you were its nurse.
On your slopes we lived for a time, and we pastured the family's flocks together.
We drove the sun toward its setting, and we set out early so we outraced the dawn.
This high ground was a playground for our youth, and it was a pasture.
How often we built dwellings from its pebbles, and then turned back and wiped the dwellings away.
We traced lines in the fine sand, but neither the wind preserved it nor did the sand retain it.
Layla remains in my eyes a child, having grown no more than a finger since yesterday.
Why are your stones so deaf, refusing to listen whenever longing stirs within me?
Whenever I come to you, I seek to call back my youth, but its days refuse to return.
A lifetime may be cheap, but not a single hour; the earth may be cheap, but not a single place.
