Composed during a period of imprisonment after Antarah ibn Shaddad was captured by the forces of Kisra, this poem reflects the profound longing and fierce resilience of the legendary pre-Islamic warrior. Addressed primarily to his beloved Abla and the winds blowing from the Hijaz, the verses pivot between tender devotion to his distant home and unyielding pride in his martial prowess, capturing the enduring tension between his absolute devotion and his hardened life as a hero and captive.

Poem text
O wind of the Hijaz, by the One who brought you into being, return the greeting and salute whoever greeted you.
Blow forth, so perhaps my deep yearning will lighten and the fires of my longing will be quenched by the coolness of your air.
O wind, were it not for a lingering trace of Abla's fragrance left within you, I would have died before meeting you.
How can I find solace when I never hear doves weeping without my being the very first to cry?
The camping place is distant, so her phantom visitor returned to me across the empty, neck-breaking wastes of the desert.
O Abla, I do not fear death itself; rather, I fear for your eyes at the moment you weep for me.
O Abla, let not my absence sadden you, and rejoice in my safety and look forward to my release.
Did you not ask the battle-steeds, O daughter of Malik, if some of your enemies had deceived you concerning me?
Whoever was present in Sham will tell you that I offered pure affection even to those who desired my ruin.
Humbled are those who schemed against me, until they finally woke up seeking intercession through my deadly sword.
Yet I pardoned their wealth and their women, and I protected the homeland of the people just as I protect your own sanctuary.
Truly I charged against the Persians with an onslaught that caused the angelic kings in the celestial spheres to wail.
I scattered them when they met me in the open plain, with the point of a spear that is a habitual shedder of blood.
